Verifying your identity and address

When opening an account, the bank will need evidence of your identity and permanent address.

This page details what our requirements are depending on the type of account you are opening. 

Note: There may be other documents we require to confirm your eligibility to open the account you want. Please refer to the other documents section and relevant product page for more details and eligibility criteria.

Personal Accounts

Acceptable documents for personal customers aged 18 or over

You need to provide one document to confirm your identity, and one document to confirm your address.

Proof of identity

  • Current signed UK passport 
  • Current signed Irish passport 
  • Current UK Photocard Full or provisional driving licence
  • EEA Member State identity card
  • Electoral identity card

Proof of address

  • Current UK Photocard Full or provisional driving licence
  • Recent utility bill (for example, electricity or landline phone) issued within the last three months
  • Current Land and Property services bill
  • Letter from HM Revenue & Customs
  • Original bank or building society statement, mortgage statement or credit card statement issued within the last three months
  • Benefit book or original letter from the relevant benefits agency confirming that you are entitled to benefits or State Pension (or both)
  • Rent book or tenancy agreement issued by a reputable landlord
  • Motor insurance certificate or schedule
  • Home insurance certificate or schedule
  • Original vehicle registration document

 

Other documents 

  • Most recent three months Bank statements from main account (if you are transferring from another Bank)
  • Last three months payslips or last three years certified audited accounts (if you plan to apply for credit)

Student Accounts

Acceptable documents for UK students

If you do not hold any of the documents listed above in the personal account section, the following alternative documents can be used.

Proof of identity

  • Photographic Student ID card

Proof of address

  • Confirmation of home address of your parent/guardian
  • Letter of confirmation of your address from the college or university
  • Tenancy agreement or student accommodation contract
  • Student loan letter of offer from Student Loan Company

Acceptable documents for students from Republic of Ireland and other countries

You need to provide one document to confirm your identity, and two documents to confirm your address.

Proof of identity

Student from Republic of Ireland

  • Current signed Irish passport. An EEA driving licence is acceptable if you do not hold a passport

 

International Student

  • A current passport. Students from non-EEA countries or Switzerland require a visa or “leave to enter” the country contained within your passport 
  • European Economic Area (EEA) Member State Identity Card

Proof of address

  • Letter of Offer/Acceptance from UCAS/University/College of Further Education
  • Original “Letter of Introduction to UK Banking Facilities” issued by University/College
  • Statement of Enrolment issued by the University / College which provides detail of your permanent home address and UK term address

Youth Accounts (aged under 18)

Acceptable documents for minors and students aged under 18 years old

You need to provide one document to confirm your identity, and one document to confirm your address.

If your parent/guardian/family member wants to open or operate this account on your behalf, they are required to provide proof of their identity and address also.

Proof of identity

  • Current passport 
  • Current UK or EEA photocard full driving licence (if held)
  • Birth certificate
  • NHS medical card
  • Child benefit documentation
  • Child tax credit documentation
  • National Insurance card (for those aged 16 and over)

Proof of address

  • Current UK photocard full driving licence (if held)
  • Original bank or building society statement issued within the last three months
  • Confirmation of home address of the parent/guardian/family member
