Did you know?

Air pollution

Air pollution is the leading environmental health risk in Europe, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO estimates that ambient pollution may be the cause of up to 569,000 deaths in Europe.

(World Health Organisation, 2023)

Slowing down

Driving at higher speeds uses significantly more fuel – for example, travelling at around 75 mph can use around 18% more fuel than driving at 60 mph, so slowing down can help reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions, while helping to improve road safety.

(Energy Savings Trust, 2024)

Carpool

Car sharing can help reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions by enabling travellers to share the cost of a journey, while also helping to cut congestion and improve air quality.

Why it matters

How we get around effects both the environment and our health. Transport is a major source of emissions and air pollution across Europe affects millions of people.

18% of Northern Ireland’s emissions come from transport, with 63% of transport emissions coming from the private car.

(NI Department for Infrastructure, 2025)

Air pollution affects health across Europe. An estimated 569,000 people die each year due to poor air quality. Across the island of Ireland, it is estimated that there were over 2,600 premature deaths associated with exposure to air pollution in 2019.

(Queens University Belfast, 2023)

Cutting transport emissions can lead to cleaner air, lower costs and healthier communities.

What you can do

Changing the way you travel can make a positive difference. Whether it’s a small change in your daily routine like walking to the shops, or a bigger shift, like switching to an electric car, every step can help reduce your impact.

Small changes:

Small changes to everyday trips add up over time. Simple choices around active travel and how you drive can help reduce fuel use, support your wellbeing and improve your overall health.

Plan ahead - journey planner apps can help you compare routes and make public transport easier to use. Visit the Translink Website

Choose active travel - walking or cycling short trips can support your health and reduce transport emissions. Visit the World Health Organization's website.

Get more from your fuel - keeping tyres correctly inflated, servicing your car and reducing speed can improve fuel efficiency. Visit the Energy Savings Trust website.

Medium changes:

Taking a slightly different approach to how you get around can bring greater savings and flexibility.

Consider a bike or e-bike - save up to 52% through the Cycle to Work Scheme. Visit the NI Direct website.

Swap short car trips - replacing short journeys with cycling where possible can help save money on fuel and parking, while also helping reduce emissions and supporting your health.

Try Park and Ride - drive part of the way, then take public transport into busy areas. Visit the NI Direct website.

Big changes:

Larger changes in how you travel can have the greatest long-term effect on your wallet and carbon footprint.

Switch to an EV - lower running costs and up to £3,500 in grants for qualifying vehicles. Visit the NI Department for Infrastructure website to learn about EV grants.

Charge at home - grants may be available to help install a home charger.

Embrace 'slow travel'  - slow travel is all about taking your time and truly immersing yourself in the places you visit, rather than rushing through a checklist of tourist spots.
